I was wondering if Mapsource software comes with a new GPS purchase or is it something you need to purchase separately?

| My original GPS unit (a StreetPilot III) came with 4.01 MapSource on the CD with the maps, and I have to install that whenever I get a new computer so that I can update it to the latest release. I'm not sure how you get an 'original' MapSource, other that did it come with your unit? If not, contact Garmin. The MapSource on the Garmin website is an software update, and won't install if you don't already have an older MapSource installed.

| Is it compatible with a Mac? I can't seem to find the original software to update. I updated my maps directly to my garmin (I think) after purchase. Someone told me that MapSource should already be on my computer. TIA for any assistance/advice.

| I have some mapsource discs from ab old GPS unit (EMAP) - is it worth keeping? My nuvi has the europe maps already installed so was wondering what benefits there is of mapsource ?

Which Garmin unit do you have? I have a Zumo, and getting routes into it is a two stage afair. Step one (which you seem to have done) is to copy the files to the unit (I tend to put the routes onto a memory card, and then plug that into the Zumo). This just puts them in a storage area on the unit, but not visible to the GPS function.
Step two is to import the routes into the GPS mapping portion of the unit itself. On the Zumo this is done via the "User Data" icon. Here you set your home location, view pictures as well as importing data (routes and/or waypoints [or Favourites as they are called here] and/or trip logs) and managing the Trip Log.
Although the units may not appear to hold as many routes as you think you might want, the storage card/unit memory can hold many more. You just import the ones you need for immediate use, the others remain on long term storage ready to be called upon when required (having deleted routes in the GPS mapping area to make room for them).

MapSource is great for sitting at your PC and planning routes. I use it for all my European trips as I can plan where to have coffee/fuel stops, where to deviate from main roads, and generally have total control over my trip. It's very easy to get the route to follow the roads you want rather than the rather crude Shortest/Fastest option on the unit itself. Recalculationg is much faster, and adding routepoints or waypoints is really easy.
I tend to also plan at least two routes. One for fine weather which would typically take me the 'scenic' route, the other is for when the weather is not so good and I just want to 'get there'.
MapSource also integrates with Google Earth. Having planned your route you can then look at the actual roads and get a good idea of what the quality of road is; what junctions look like; villages/towns; layout of fuel stops from the road; other interesting things!
Another neat trick is to collect the trip log from your unit and look at in MapSource. You'll find an almost second by second detailed view of your route: Speed, distance, elevation.
The advantage of keeping your old disks is that once you have installed MapSource you can download the latest updates. As Garmin only publish updates, you'll need an old version to start with.

i'm also wondering about the Mac compatibility (i'm a bit new to all this so far). Garmin has a listing of their Mac compatible apps though, if that helps.

Hi
I have the 660 model and have since found that with trial and error the unit only accepts waypoints when sent from mapsource the points go straight to the favourites folder so I have to name them 1,2,3 etc to plan a route. Not very user friendly. If any one knows a better way please let me know
