Solid and reliable. I wish the touch screen didnt require so much pressure for it to register a finger press. A bit slow but its definitely a keeper. Takes an SD card so you can take larger maps as time moves on. |
Screen almost requires you to crush it in order for the device to register a finger press. As a result the targeting that determines things like when you have to enter an address on the keyboard is difficult. Almost would be better if they designed a physical keyboard for people with stubby fingers rather than the old school touch screen which is just annoying unless you know what youre dealing with. |

Simple to use and compact. |
A bit sluggish when in use and distances are off by about 50-60 ft when approaching turns. |

Maps are better than Navteq devices. |
Garmin would not update Lifetime updates from original purchased unit, to replacement unit (after original was stolen) |

Garmin Nuvi 255WT |
An excellent piece of kit. |
Direction symbol (Top left) does not always match up with the map. Follow the map rather than the symbol! |

Simple,quick,and trouble free.
Have not had a single hiccup,I can only highly recommend it.
This is my third Garmin and they only get better.I even took it overseas and it also worked well over there. |
on the very odd occasion it would be unable to get a signal even on an open area and switching it off and then back on after 10 or 15 seconds and then would pick up signal straight away. |

Garmin nuvi 255w |
accurate as long as data relevant to your country is installed and not europe wide. |
not very forgiving if a place is mis-spelt. Road and street names must be exactly as recorded in the data base so lwr or upr in a street name wont be accepted. |

Garmin Nuvi 255 |
Very Good Navigation
Large, Easy to read characters
Small screen, yet very easy to see
Clock seems to adjust to Daylight Saving by the Arrival Time.
Voices have excellent legibility.
Very Intuitive and well designed, and compatible to mere mortals, (except minor point with dashboard below).
Incredible speed of route calculation.
Positoning very accurate.

Could be a bit louder
Prefer the Navman interface a bit. On this Garmin, you have go into the dashboard to see some time and distance functions, but this is a preference rather than a problem as such.
Haven't found a clock display as such. |

Garmin Nuvi 255w |
Easy to use, simple |
It would be nice if a user could uptimize the most efficient route for several waipoints.
Also it would be nice to be able to access photos by touching the map icons. I store more detailed maps of apartment complexes etc and I need a more convenient way to access this data. |

Garmin Nuvi255 / Uniden Trax436 |
Garmin: Easy to update. Lots of freebies available on web sites. Nice little unit.
Uniden: Very handy bluetooth for lazy drivers. Nice clear large screen |
Problems with pre-installed safety cameras. Voice could be a little louder.

Garmin 255W |
Good display and sound. Seems rugged. Eco-Route feature tells you how efficiently (%) you are driving based on your cars MPG ratings and factory installed speed limits.
Just purchased so I am still evaluating this model.
After much research I felt the BLuetooth option and traffic alerts was unreliable. |
Only shows time of arrival and not time left to arrive. Cant custom program turn/off-ramp alerts (in miles/km).
The suction-cup mount has a ball and ring configuration to swivel. I suspect the metal ring may weaken with time making it impossible to keep the unit exactly where you want it. ie. the unit will sag. |

Garmin Nuvi 255W |
It finds the remotest destinations. Easy to enter destinations. Easy to follow. |
Not an option to stick with main roads. Often end up on rural crude roads not so easy to drive on especially pulling a trailer. |

Garmin NUVI 255 and 255W |
Have Garmin 255 and 255W
Strengths are beautiful simple interface.
Love how it turns on by itself and turns off by itself when you start and stop the car.
Very fast processing and re-routing when I go the wrong way.
Big GPS are silly, take up too much space on the windscreen, the garmin uses the space sensibly in a smaller screen plus the speedo style display of trip meter and speed etc is great
Love how they have mac software to manage their devices. |
Doesnt come with speed cameras etc by default
Upgrading maps when you have more than one unit ends up downloading same file each time until I figured it out I could re-use existing files. |

Garmin nuvi 255w |
Pros: 1) quick screen load and map changes; 2) good satellite reception; 3) intuitive screen and operation interface. 4) large number of POIs included and the ability to add additional personal POIs; 5) rugged construction; 6) I like it. |
Mainly regarding the voices.
The non-TTS voices are a bit scratchy -- some more than others -- the British voices work best for my ears.
The TTS voices are mostly unlistenable for any length of time.
Of the TTS group, the Australian voices sound the best to me.
I bought this unit specifically for a trip to France, and have realized that the TTS voice function is almost irrelevant for driving in France. As you would expect, none of the English voices pronounce French street names very well. Most of the time, Ill have to look at the screen to figure out what the street actually is.
However, I don't think this is a deal-breaker, since I can go with non-TTS voice, and the British lady voice is fine... |

Garmin Nuvi 255 |
Small, compact, good battery life, Text-To-Speech, nice compact windshield suction mount, easy to use, fast at locating satellites, popular support/compatibility with 3rd party websites. |
Poor via point management - can not change order easily (at least I haven't discovered how),
No QWERTY style keyboard (Grrrr!),
Proximity alerts are not directional (I use them to input Red Light camera locations -- annoying beep even AFTER you drive away from intersection), annoying disclaimer screen on EVERY bootup. |

Garmin Nuvi 255 |
Im a new user and may not be fully qualified to comment, but to date I am totally happy with the Nuvi 255.
It navigated me flawlessly around a capital city I was unfamiliar with for several days in all types of traffic. |
The only thing that comes to mind after short use would be the ability to input to the QWERTY layout rather than ABC.... The option to select either is available on the Nuvi 255 |
