Post Garmin battery dies on NJ Turnpike

I was given the Garmin Nuvi 2555 for my birthday, at least 4 or 5 years ago.
I was driving towards New Brunswick NJ for a friends birthday party with the address plugged into my Garmin, it was directing me fine until its battery was low so I pulled over to plug it in to the charger and continue on,
but it kept saying battery low and would just turn off, which was no help.

I made it to my location luckily with basic directions and street signs.

Has this happen to anyone else and is it time to just buy a new GPS.
